In grade three this week…. Students continued to practice their comprehension skills while reading to self. They also focused on identifying when authors described characters using particular traits or behaviours so that they could do this to make their own writing more interesting. In addition, while going online to research education in Ukraine, Tunisia, Peru, or India, students used text features, such as captions and labels. They used text elements to determine meaning and significance for the pictures they were examining. This weekend, ask your child one fact they learned when researching online. In writing, students elaborated on their story beginnings by adding detail about their characters and settings. When writing about their characters, they included behavior, appearance, age, and name. When writing about their settings, they included using two of their senses and the time of day their story took place. To write their plan and story beginning, instead of a p...

In grade three this week….. Students continued to practice a variety of reading strategies, including making connections. They also learned how to look for key words and pull out important information while doing research on Peru, Ukraine, Tunisia, and India. After identifying key information in what they read, students recorded their understanding using jot notes. Ask your child to tell you interesting information they were able to pull out when researching. After finishing a story, including elements like an interesting beginning, problem, attempt to solve the problem, and consistent punctuation, students examined what it means to give “good feedback” to one another in order to improve their work. After watching a short video of another class giving feedback, students determined that in our class, feedback should be helpful, kind, detailed, and specific. They then used these feedback criteria to give one another feedback. Their feedback was ...

Students continued to work on a variety of reading strategies and recording their ideas in their reading response journals. They also continued to be word collectors and add interesting words to their journals that they would like to include in their own writing. When reading this weekend, ask your child to tell you a strategy they are using. In writing, students continued to work on their stories. After choosing a picture from a number of options, students brainstormed ideas and created their story plans. Then we reviewed the ways to make their beginnings interesting, such as using dialogue or describing the character. Students used their preference for a story beginning and then continued their stories, which included a problem, attempts to solve the problem, and a solution. Ask your child to tell you if they wrote about the gorillas, children o...

Happy New Year, Sibbald Families.  We hope you had a wonderful break. Welcome back! In grade three this week… Students reviewed reading strategies and recorded them in their reading response journals. They recorded connections, such as text-to-self and text-to-text, as well as responded to characters by explaining their traits. The students read an example of a grade three student’s story and highlighted elements that the author used to make her writing more interesting. Some elements that the students identified were using sound words, dialogue, and description. The students then used elements that they thought were effective to revise their own writing they had completed about their winter break. Students reviewed four different strategies to add. As they solved problems, they justified their answers and worked on their math discussions. Throughout the week, students demonstrated great discussion skills by asking one another questions, such as “Can...
