January 9 - 11

Happy New Year, Sibbald Families.
We hope you had a wonderful break. Welcome back!
In grade three this week…
Students reviewed reading
strategies and recorded them in their reading response journals. They recorded
connections, such as text-to-self and text-to-text, as well as responded to
characters by explaining their traits.
The students read an example
of a grade three student’s story and highlighted elements that the author used
to make her writing more interesting. Some elements that the students
identified were using sound words, dialogue, and description. The students then
used elements that they thought were effective to revise their own writing they
had completed about their winter break.
Students reviewed four
different strategies to add. As they solved problems, they justified their
answers and worked on their math discussions. Throughout the week, students
demonstrated great discussion skills by asking one another questions, such as
“Can you clarify…?” and also adding to one another’s ideas by saying “I want to
extend on ….’s idea by….”
Students examined a Social
Studies textbook and identified information they found interesting or made
connections to. Some students recognized that the book had a title called
“Quality of Life” which they learned about last term. They also showed
curiosity when seeing children carrying water in buckets on their heads and
when seeing pictures of students learning when sitting on the ground outside.
Throughout the next few weeks, students will be exploring the similarities and
differences amongst people in the world.
In PE, students played floor
hockey and sledge hockey. They learned important safety expectations, such as
keeping their sticks down and hands off the floor while using the scooters.
They practiced skills, such as passing and shooting.
Sibbald U started this week!
The grade threes enjoyed a variety of courses, including jewelry making, drama,
photography, sewing, painting, and many more!
