This week, the students: -continued to work on using the sense of sight to describe objects and pictures. They determined that descriptive sight words can be organized by colour, size, and texture. -began practicing giving peer feedback by using statements such as "I like how you..." and "How would you describe...?" or "Could you add...?"  - learned and practiced their mental math by working with doubles facts to 20. They also practiced their basic facts by adding two numbers to 12. They worked on these skills by playing dice games.  -learned the parts of the ear and how these work together to allow us to hear. They also learned that sound can be measured in decibels. -played two versions of Battleship in P.E. -engaged in conversations about Terry Fox and Orange Shirt Day. In response to... This week, the students: - looked at mentor texts to see how authors use their sense of hearing to add description to writing. Then the students revised their  "Favourite Place" writing by adding descriptive sound words. Some student examples are "Ka-Pow!", "Bam!", "Whoosh", and "Creeeeak". -also focused on their sense of sight as a way to increase their descriptive language. As a way to build their vocabulary, students went to  the Learning Grounds to seek out a "gem" or a natural material that they later had to describe during a gallery walk. Some words used were "jagged", "sharp", "smooth", "grainy", and "spotted".  - tried a new routine called I Notice...and I Wonder... in Math. They examined a short video clip using their Math lens and discussed what they noticed and wondered. This provided them with an opportunity to see Math as open and approachable. It will al...

We had a great first week in Grade Three! It was wonderful watching students reconnect with friends and also make new ones. The students became comfortable with one another as peers and we enjoyed getting to know them as learners.  This week, the students: -completed an "About Me" page in their visual journals. -completed a self-reflection on reading and writing. They brainstormed how these literacy tasks make them feel. -tried out different spots in the classroom to see where they felt most comfortable reading. The different options in our room are the stumps, stools, comfy chairs, tables, standing tables, and carpet. -started "Fire Writing". -collaborated in groups of four to find numbers to 100. After attempting this task a few times, we discussed how it is important in math to try different strategies and to share them with others.  -identified as a class, that group work looks like "focusing, listening, talking to each other, taking ...
