This week, the students:
-continued to work on using the sense of sight to describe objects and pictures. They determined that descriptive sight words can be organized by colour, size, and texture.
-began practicing giving peer feedback by using statements such as "I like how you..." and "How would you describe...?" or "Could you add...?" 
-learned and practiced their mental math by working with doubles facts to 20. They also practiced their basic facts by adding two numbers to 12. They worked on these skills by playing dice games. 
-learned the parts of the ear and how these work together to allow us to hear. They also learned that sound can be measured in decibels.
-played two versions of Battleship in P.E.
-engaged in conversations about Terry Fox and Orange Shirt Day.

In response to... Why do we run a Terry Fox race?
CB -"We run for Terry Fox because he had cancer in his leg. We run for him and we run for kids who have cancer."
IB - "We run for the money to keep the spirit alive and the memory of Terry."
BR -"To show that we care."h
JKT - "We run to support Terry Fox and how far he made it across Canada."
A– "We run because it is like a tradition and it honours Terry Fox and how much he did." 
LC- "We run to honour the act that he made for cancer."

Thank you to all the families who helped with and participated in the Terry Fox Run. Also, we would like to thank you for sending in your donations; today, through a math challenge, the students determined that our classroom community surpassed our goal. 

Volunteers needed:
Field Trip: We have an upcoming all day field trip to Telus Spark on October 10th and we require volunteers. We would like to invite 6-8 volunteers in total from both classrooms (Rooms 10 and 11). Please note that you must have a security clearance completed to attend the field trip. Notices were sent home on Thursday.

Students are settling into their routines and continuing to make connections. Throughout our first full week, they engaged in a variety of tasks! This week, the students: -continued exploring various spaces in the classroom to focus on the different areas where they learn best. -used criteria to reflect on their writing and spent time revising their work. -went on a ‘Listening Walk’ through the Learning Grounds. There, they focussed on their sense of hearing and created a Sound Map where they recorded the sounds they heard. -began to incorporate descriptive vocabulary such as sound words (boom, swish, pop, snap, buzz, etc.) into their writing about their favourite place. -completed a ‘Show What You Know’ on a range of Math topics. Highlights of our week from the perspective of our students: "This week we made self portraits. We used different materials to make our self portraits. For my hair I used brown yarn and I also used pink ribbons." SS "We wrote about our self portraits and one of the things I wrote about was I used a blue background to let my brother know that I am always thinking about him." AM "We read a book which was no words in it,  its called Flotsam and in the book there was a boy who found a flotsam in the water that was an underwater camera. that takes pictures. The boy found a special photo of people taking photos of themselves with a photo and it goes on and on and at the end of the book the boy throws it in the water and someone else finds it."ED "Ms. Manser and Mr. Newman did the chicken dance in the assembly." In grade three this week (from the students' perspectives): "This week we did SOGO. Each class in the school got to go. In Ms. De Luca's class we did a scavenger hunt and we had beepers on our finger and every time we go to the flags we won't put the beeper inside and mark it and then we went to another flag. Then Ms. Bonanno did the other one and we switched to the next day." AM "For SOGO on the first day Ms. Bonanno's class did a scavenger hunt for symbols and each symbol had a different meaning." SS "In Sports day we had freezies and it was raining outside. We also got to play in the gym and outside. It was themed Superheroes.
