January 21 - 25
Students continued to practice a variety of reading
strategies, including making connections. They also learned how to look for key
words and pull out important information while doing research on Peru, Ukraine,
Tunisia, and India. After identifying key information in what they read,
students recorded their understanding using jot notes. Ask your child to tell
you interesting information they were able to pull out when researching.
After finishing a story, including elements like an
interesting beginning, problem, attempt to solve the problem, and consistent
punctuation, students examined what it means to give “good feedback” to one
another in order to improve their work. After watching a short video of another
class giving feedback, students determined that in our class, feedback should
be helpful, kind, detailed, and specific. They then used these feedback
criteria to give one another feedback. Their feedback was in the form of a star
(I like how you…..) and a wish (Could you try…). After receiving this star and
wish, students revised their work. Ask your child to tell you one thing they
revised, after peer feedback, to improve their story.
Students practiced their subtraction basic facts in a
variety of ways. They also worked on subtracting two digits by two digits with
and without regrouping. This week, the focus was on using manipulatives and
visuals to demonstrate how to regroup. Ask your child to draw out and show you
how they would find the difference for 32-16.
The students continued to research about the four countries
mentioned above. They researched how people in these countries access food and
water. They then looked for similarities and differences to their own lives
here in Calgary. Ask your child how people in one of these countries accesses
water.
Students worked on their basketball skills. They practiced
dribbling using an arm bar to protect their ball. They also worked on bounce
passes. To practice these skills, students participated in team relays and also
a game of “keep away”. Ask your child to explain one important thing to
remember when dribbling.
Students had another week working with Mr. Newman and Dash the Robot for our robotic residency. This week students continued to program their robot to follow a maze and incorporate various transitions and features. As well, students had an opportunity to show their creative side through storytelling. Students were provided with a picture prompt as a springboard and told a story using props, lights, sounds and movement.
