January 14-18th
Students continued to work on a variety of reading
strategies and recording their ideas in their reading response journals. They
also continued to be word collectors and add interesting words to their journals
that they would like to include in their own writing. As well, when researching
this week, students learned how to look for key words in order to pull out
important information. When reading this weekend, ask your child to tell you a
strategy they are using.
In writing, students continued to work on their stories.
After choosing a picture from a number of options, students brainstormed ideas
and created their story plans. Then we reviewed the ways to make their
beginnings interesting, such as using dialogue or describing the character.
Students used their preference for a story beginning and then continued their
stories, which included a problem, attempts to solve the problem, and a
solution. Ask your child to tell you if they wrote about the gorillas, children on
the inner tube, or girl with the mini door.
Students worked on their subtraction basic facts. They used
cards for practice and as a class, shared strategies for determining the
differences. Some of the strategies that students shared were to count back,
count up, use a number line, or doubles. Ask your child to subtract numbers
from 18 or lower and to explain their strategy (e.g. 18–7 = ____, 9-2=___, 15-5=___, 8-3=___, etc.)
Students began to look at the four countries we will be
studying. They found Ukraine, India, Tunisia, and Peru on maps and then began
researching about these countries. After starting to research, students
identified that people all around the world have the same basic needs but they
may be met in different ways. They then started looking through information to
see the different ways people in these four countries access water. Ask your
child to tell you something they found interesting when starting to research these countries.
This week students worked with Mr. Newman during our robotics residency featuring the robot, Dash. Students had an opportunity to work through various modules using the app Wonder and use the free play feature to create a code. This code programmed their robot to follow a maze while using various transitions and features, such as lights, sounds, and turns. The students showed tremendous perseverance and problem solving strategies this week!
It was another great Friday of Sibbald U! The students were excited to spend another day learning in their various courses.
