January 28th - 31st
In grade three this week….
Students continued to practice their comprehension skills
while reading to self. They also focused on identifying when authors described
characters using particular traits or behaviours so that they could do this to
make their own writing more interesting. In addition, while going online to
research education in Ukraine, Tunisia, Peru, or India, students used text
features, such as captions and labels. They used text elements to determine
meaning and significance for the pictures they were examining. This weekend,
ask your child one fact they learned when researching online.
In writing, students elaborated on their story beginnings by
adding detail about their characters and settings. When writing about their
characters, they included behavior, appearance, age, and name. When writing
about their settings, they included using two of their senses and the time of
day their story took place. To write their plan and story beginning, instead of
a picture prompt this week, students were given a sound as a way to spark their
ideas. This weekend, ask your child to tell you what their story is about and
what interesting details they included about their characters and settings.
Students continued working on subtraction. They practiced
their subtraction and addition basic facts by playing warm up games, such as
“_____ is my sum. What’s under my thumb?” If you have dice at home, try this
game this weekend! Students also continued to practice their subtraction
requiring regrouping of three and two digit numbers. For example, students
worked on questions like 342-116= and 544-27=. So far, we have focused on using manipulatives and
visuals as a way to represent their understanding of regrouping. Over the next
few weeks, students will practice subtraction using different strategies and
then will be encouraged to choose the one they are most comfortable with when
solving problems. Ask your child to draw out how they would solve 462-35=.
Students had an opportunity this week to continue their research focussing in on how communities around the world (Peru, Tunisia, Ukraine, India) access their basic needs. Students examined a collection of images from Ukraine focussing in on how others access education and created a collage documenting what they noticed. Later in the week they chose another country of choice (Tunisia, Peru, India) and created another collage based on the images they collected that connected to education. Students are making connections about the similarities and differences they noticed between the two countries and their own educational experience.
On Thursday, students had an opportunity to watch a performance called, Flow Factor performed by representatives from Kananaskis in the Classroom. During this engaging presentation students learned about the water cycle, pollutants that affect water, the importance of wetlands and ways in which humans can conserve water.
