In grade three this week (from the students' perspectives): 
“In math, we were doing 3D shapes and we had to build the shapes we were looking at out of toothpicks and plasticine. Today we looked at the 3D shapes.” JKT

“Today we were working to see what size we should do for our Little Free Pantry. We built a replica and we were working on the size.” AG

“Today we built another Little Free Pantry on the floor or a table made out of popsicle sticks or straws or rulers. We measured them. We recorded the measurements in our visual journals. Mine was: the width was 46 cm and it was 53 cm tall.” MH

“The height for our Little Free Pantry had to be between 38 cm and 98 cm. The width had to be between 30 cm and 65 cm.” NR

“Yesterday in our visual journals, we drew how we want the Little Free Pantry to look.” JP

“In fire writing, we’ve been working on a story. It’s called the Adventure of the Pirates. It’s about pirates and we don’t know a lot about pirates but we made up a funny story about them. They keep getting stuck on different islands and they find a red panda thinking it’s a treasure but they’re extinct except that one. They couldn’t find the right island because Bob ate the map. All the characters are Bob, Cracker, Reddy, there’s a little girl who is five, a captain, and a siren.” EW, AR, ES

“In fire writing, I was writing a story called The Old House. My friend printed a sheet of paper with a haunted house on it so I used it to make a story. It’s about three kids who go to a haunted house. They find a character.” CM

“In PE, we were doing Frisbee. We were learning how to throw them and how to make sure they don’t go to outer space or hit birds. Also not to make the worms angry.” EM

“Today in music, we did duet songs and you were either Soprano 2 or Soprano 1.” HL

“In music, we learned a new song and a new note. It was D. It was a little hard for me because we had to use one of our weak fingers.” AM

“In music, we were doing recorder karate and there are belts. I’m pretty sure there is white, yellow, orange, green, purple, blue, red, brown, and black. There is a master belt. I’m on my green belt.” BR

“Thursday was the Volunteer Tea. The choir sang some songs to them. The Volunteer Tea is for the volunteers. They come here and we get to celebrate them.” LE


“This week we did art for the Volunteer Tea. It was flowers.” EM

Students are settling into their routines and continuing to make connections. Throughout our first full week, they engaged in a variety of tasks! This week, the students: -continued exploring various spaces in the classroom to focus on the different areas where they learn best. -used criteria to reflect on their writing and spent time revising their work. -went on a ‘Listening Walk’ through the Learning Grounds. There, they focussed on their sense of hearing and created a Sound Map where they recorded the sounds they heard. -began to incorporate descriptive vocabulary such as sound words (boom, swish, pop, snap, buzz, etc.) into their writing about their favourite place. -completed a ‘Show What You Know’ on a range of Math topics. This will help guide us on where to go next. -were provided an opportunity to share what they already know about Hearing and Sound. June 17th - June 21st

In grade three this week (from the students' perspectives): "This week we did SOGO. Each class in the school got to go. In Ms. De Luca's class we did a scavenger hunt and we had beepers on our finger and every time we go to the flags we won't put the beeper inside and mark it and then we went to another flag. Then Ms. Bonanno did the other one and we switched to the next day." AM "For SOGO on the first day Ms. Bonanno's class did a scavenger hunt for symbols and each symbol had a different meaning." SS "In Sports day we had freezies and it was raining outside. We also got to play in the gym and outside. It was themed Superheroes. This week, the students: - looked at mentor texts to see how authors use their sense of hearing to add description to writing. Then the students revised their  "Favourite Place" writing by adding descriptive sound words. Some student examples are "Ka-Pow!", "Bam!", "Whoosh", and "Creeeeak". -also focused on their sense of sight as a way to increase their descriptive language. As a way to build their vocabulary, students went to  the Learning Grounds to seek out a "gem" or a natural material that they later had to describe during a gallery walk. Some words used were "jagged", "sharp", "smooth", "grainy", and "spotted".  - tried a new routine called I Notice...and I Wonder... in Math.
