March 4th - 8th
In grade three this week….
Students continued to work on their reading
skills and recording their understanding in their reading response journal.
They also practiced reading for information when researching about global
citizenship. When researching, they looked for key words and points, recorded
these, and explained them in their own words.
The students continued to work on note taking
while researching. They worked hard to make sure they only wrote down ideas
they understood and putting them into their own words. Students did a great job
of looking up words they were not sure of and then recording them. One example
of this was the word “drought”. When a group did not know what this word meant,
they looked it up in the dictionary and then recorded their understanding in
their notes.
Students worked on using a variety of strategies
to understand multiplication. The strategies they worked on included visuals,
repeated addition, skip counting, multiplying by one, and the commutative
property (2x3= 3x2=). Ask your child to show you how they prefer to solve
questions, such as 3 x 4 = and 5 x 2 =.
The grade threes continued to research about
other countries. They learned that organizations, such as UNICEF and the WE
Movement help globally. They also learned how these organizations help
communities around the world in ways such as by improving their access to water
and education. In addition, students had an opportunity to research how the Red
Cross supports communities during emergencies, such as natural disasters. Ask
your child to name one organization that helps globally and how it helps.
Students did a great job using plasticine to
demonstrate their understanding or one of the UN Convention on the Rights of
the Child. Ask your child to share which right they made a scene of and to
explain why they did it that way.
In PE, students had another great week of
gymnastics exploring different stations. The stations required students to use
different skills, such as balancing, hanging, rolling, and climbing. All of the
stations developed the students’ core strength. Ask your child to tell you
their favourite gymnastics station.
