November 5 - 9
In Grade Three this week...
While reading, students continued to work on making
connections as well as finding descriptive words that they could include in
their writing. After whole class read alouds, the students identified the main
parts of a story. They explained that stories include a beginning which
introduces the characters and setting, the middle which often includes a
problem or the main event, and the end which includes the solution. After
reading two stories, Not Norman by Kelly Bennett and The Sandwich
Swap by Kelly DiPucchio and Queen Rania of Jordan, students used a story
map to write/draw these particular elements. After using this strategy when
stories are read, students will now use the story map strategy to plan how they
will write their own stories. As you read with your child this weekend, ask
them to identify these elements of a story.
Students continued to work with numbers to 1000. They
created the greatest two and three digit numbers possible and then found the
sum. The students could use any strategy that they are familiar with to find
the sum. As a class, students shared their strategies. Some of the strategies
used were with manipulatives, drawing base ten blocks as visuals, expanded
form, and using numbers to show regrouping. This weekend, ask your child which
strategy they prefer and to show you an example of how they use it.
For our inquiry task, students continued to examine our
needs. They determined that our quality of life depends on basic needs, such as
health, safety, shelter, education, and others. Students examined their own
lives and determined things and people who help them meet their basic needs which then impacts their quality of life. After this, the students read a story and
looked at pictures of children in other parts of the world. The students discussed that they noticed that basic needs can be met differently. Ask your child to
explain how their basic needs impact their quality of life (e.g. The playground
at our school keeps me healthy because I stay active by using it daily).
The grade threes worked collaboratively to create about 120
beautiful 3D poppies. These poppies stood up on display for the lovely
Remembrance Day Assembly. Students also contributed to the assembly by singing
in the choir, drawing and writing about peace, reading these ideas, and
distributing poppies. Ask your child what peace means to them.
In PE, students worked on their physical fitness. They
completed a circuit to work on a variety of physical skills. Ask your child
which station was their favourite.
Thank you
Thank you to all those who were able attend the Remembrance Day Assembly. We had a great turnout and the students did a wonderful job in the various performances.
