November 12-16
In Grade Three this week...
Students had an opportunity to independently use a story planner to support them in the writing process. This week, students planned out two story ideas (using a picture prompt) and chose to write a narrative story about one of them. To support them in this process, students had talk time with their peers prior to planning out their story in an effort to support each other with generating ideas. During the writing process, students had time to work on their writing and used the posted criteria to support them. In our final step, students spent some time reviewing their written work and looking for evidence in their writing on how they met the focused criteria of adding details (who, what, when, where and why). In addition, this week students had an opportunity to explore various word games emphasizing word play, spelling and/or meanings of words (vocabulary).

Students explored various addition strategies when finding the sum for 3 digit by 2 and/or 3 digit numbers with and without regrouping. Over the week, students explored and practiced using the various strategies to support them when solving addition problems such as using manipulatives (base 10 blocks), using pictures (base 10 pictorial representations), the traditional algorithm such as stacking and the break apart strategy which breaks the numbers into their respected place value and then the numbers are added together to find the sum (expanded form). As a class, students shared their strategies and their preferences of the different types. This weekend, ask your child which strategy they prefer and to show you an example of how they use it.
Students continued to examine how quality of life depends on basic needs, such as health, safety, shelter, education, and others. This week, students had an opportunity to go on a school walk and explore the school with the lens of how our school community meets our needs. With iPad in hand, students took photos of evidence they found within the school and connected it to basic needs. For instance, the smoke detector is part of safety because it keeps us safe from fire and our journal is an example of education because it lets us practice writing. Once students returned to class, they had an opportunity to create a photo collage using an app to support them in organizing their photos into the different needs categories.
In PE, students worked in pairs and practiced the volleyball skill of 'bumping' (forearm pass). For this particular skill, we focussed on being in the ready position - feet spread slightly wider than shoulders, knees bent, straight arms and proper form in hand placement.
